Remote Monitoring for Safer Household Energy
Billions of people around the world rely on traditional energy sources, such as wood-burning mud stoves, for household cooking and heat. However, burning traditional fuels can cause health problems, including pulmonary disease from smoke inhalation and birth abnormalities from prenatal carbon monoxide exposure.
Nexleaf innovated remote temperature monitoring to promote safer household energy technology. Our devices and dashboard applied real-time data solutions to align incentives among donors, entrepreneurs, and the women who cook.
A Pay-for-Performance Model Based on Data
Nexleaf’s monitoring technology helped build a clean cooking ecosystem that provided incentives to women for switching to cleaner, safer household cooking practices.
Mobile Payments Support Behavior Change
Nexleaf partners including Qualcomm Wireless Reach and mPesa helped create a credit system to reward documented cooking on cleaner cookstoves.

Nexleaf Analytics in Nature
Our research, based upon our work gathering unprecedented objective data on household cooking behavior and analyzing cooking cohorts, was published in a Nature journal in 2016.
